HISTORY OF TURKISH FASHION BETWEEN THE EARLY REPUBLICAN PERIOD AND THE 1990s
The number of academics doing scientific study on fashion in Turkey has reached considerable numbers. However, unfortunately, there are not many studies that historicize developments and label them as a case of Turkey, thus not giving the necessary importance or dare to define local authenticity. Fashion and clothing are trying to be squeezed into the boundaries of the ‘popular’, in fact one of the most important elements of local culture with its social, political and economic indicators is clothing preferences and the fact that these preferences are sometimes shaped by their indicators, or the interaction of clothing fashion producers with the agenda of the country…
In her study, in which Dilek Himam particularly focuses on critical transformation times such as the 1960s and 1970s, she sheds light on both the fashion movements in Turkey and, consequently, the effects of political, economic and sociological changes on fashion with precious visuals, and we are treated an impressive pioneering work.
