Saffet Emre Tonguç ve Pat Yale 2007'de bugüne kadar yazılmış en kapsamlı en güncel ve en zengin görsel içeriğe sahip İstanbul kitabını yazmak üzere yola çıktılar ve bir senede biteceğini sandıkları bu macera tam tamına üç sene sürdü. Şehirde bazen yürüyerek bazen değişik araçları kullanarak 15.600 km. yol kateden ikilinin kendi çektikleri fotoğraflara 60'tan fazla fotoğrafçı katkıda bulundu. 650 sayfalık kitapta 3.000 fotoğraf illüstrasyon harita gravür minyatür ve tarihi fotoğraf kullandılar. Tarihi ve turistik mekanlar dışında şehirdeki restoran kafe bar dükkan otel hostel gece kulübü ve hamam gibi 2.000'e yakın mekanı ziyaret edip görüşlerini satırlara aktardılar. Gebze'den Ağva'ya şehirde ayak basmadıkları yer kalmadı. Most guidebooks for Turks are written by Turks while those for foreigners are written by foreigners. This rare collaborative effort brings together the insider knowledge of a life-long Istanbul resident and the outsider curiosity of a frequent visitor. Says Pat: "Most visitors to Turkey and that includes guidebook writers - can't read Turkish which means that they can't access all the information available. By working together Saffet and I were able to explore many different sources in both our languages and come up with a text which is equally well written in both languages."
